Stewart W. Herman, Jr.

Stewart Winfield Herman, Jr. was born August 4, 1909 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1930 and from Gettysburg Theological Seminary in 1934. He was ordained by the United Lutheran Church in America in 1934. He then went overseas to continue his studies in Germany, also serving as pastor of the interdenominational American Church in Berlin from 1936-1941. When the U.S. joined World War II in December of 1941, Herman was interned for five months under the Nazi regime. After the war, Herman spent two years as deputy director of the World Council of Churches Department of Reconstruction and Relief. He then served as director of the newly inaugurated Service to Refugees program within Lutheran World Federation from July 1948 until 1952.

In October 1952, Dr. Herman was named executive secretary of the National Lutheran Council's new Division on Lutheran Cooperation in Latin America and the director of the Lutheran World Federation's new Committee on Latin America. Later, Herman was selected to become the first president of the newly consolidated Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1963. He continued as President until his retirement in 1970.
