Got advice?
We’re planning to provide words of wisdom and comfort to the youth and young adults at the ELCA Youth Gathering this July. We’ll be doing this in a café where the teens can receive thoughtful words from their sisters, mothers, aunts and grandmothers across the church. Here’s where you come in. You are asked to share your wisdom about relationships, vocation and faith, in one to five lines of text. Send your advice via email ; enter “words of wisdom” in the subject line of your message. Or you can use this form and mail it in. All advice is needed by June 30.
LIRS seeks board nominations Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) seeks nominations for its 2013 board of directors and committees. The LIRS board sets the organization’s mission goals and ensures that it has the resources, leadership and oversight necessary to carry them out. LIRS is seeking some specific skills and expertise, and these are outlined in the call for nominations. Nominations are due by June 15, 2012. Potential candidates and nominators can view the call for nominations, expectations of board and committee members, the nominations timeline and the nominations form.

May is for Katie’s Fund!
Each May we honor Katharina von Bora Luther by telling her story, honoring her bold life of faith and raising money for Katie’s Fund. The fund, established in 1997 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Women of the ELCA, generates income for Women of the ELCA ministries that develop leaders, bridge cultures and nurture faith.
To learn how we’re continuing Katie’s legacy in 2012, check out the April issue of Interchange. For ideas you can use in celebrating Katie’s Fund this month, check out the May issue of Interchange.
You can make an online gift to Katie’s Fund right now. If you need envelopes for a special offering, order them online. Questions about Katie’s Fund can be directed to Emma Crossen , director for stewardship and development.
You’re invited to Liberia
We’re marking the 25th anniversary of our organization with a trip to Liberia. Some of the organization’s oldest relationships exist with Lutheran women in Liberia. It will be an exciting time and place to reflect on our global relationships and possibilities for the future of Women of the ELCA and the National Lutheran Church Women Fellowship of Liberia (the women’s organization of the Lutheran Church in Liberia).
The tour is scheduled for December 8-15, 2012. (The exact days may change to accommodate the program being planned, availability of resource persons and travel cost.) The eight days will be filled with accompanying Lutheran women in their ministries as well as women in society.
We’ll visit both the Phoebe Hospital Nursing School and Curran Hospital, a ministry of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. American Lutheran women have been supporting these and other education and health ministries in Liberia since 1916. The tour is open to all women wishing to help the organization celebrate its 25 years of faithful service who are also looking forward to being involved in the future of Women of the ELCA.
If you are interested in making the journey, call us at 1-800-638-3522 ext. 2741 or e-mail Valora Starr, director for discipleship, for more information and to receive tour updates.
Going glocal!
Glocal Mission Gatherings (GMGs), offered through the ELCA’s Global Mission unit, bring together congregational leaders for a day and a half of worship, workshops and sharing around global and local mission. Women of the ELCA staff gather participants, usually over lunch, to discuss and apply the GMG learnings to the mission of our organization.
“Glocal” is a new term used to describe God’s work where global and local realities connect. Every day, in the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the cars we drive, we are having glocal experiences. GMGs help you make sense of these connections and experience them within the context of your faith. At a GMG you learn about the changing context of the global church. You get a biblical foundation for the accompaniment model of mission. Global companions share their witness. Lively devotions that include global voices inform the fellowship time of networking and connecting. In-depth, skill-building workshops round out the GMG. Register today for an upcoming GMG near you!
