The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is a global communion of Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, the LWF now has 145 member churches in 79 countries representing more than 70.1 million Lutherans worldwide. The LWF acts on behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as ecumenical relations, theology, humanitarian assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects of mission and development work.
The LWF Regional Office in North America was established in 1998 to increase awareness and strengthen commitment of member churches in the region through deepening relationship expressed in gifts sharing and concrete cooperation and serves the three LWF member churches in its region:

Munib Younan Elected President of Lutheran World Federation. The Rev. Munib A. Younan, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), has been elected president of the LWF. Younan succeeds the Rev. Mark S. Ecumenical Commitment to Continue. The Lutheran commitment to ecumenism will not end until members can share the Eucharist with other churches, said the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, president of the LWF.
Lutheran World Federation President Pleads for Unity Despite Differences. The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, president of the LWF and presiding bishop of the ELCA, appealed to delegates at the LWF assembly here to hold together and avoid splits in the face of differences over issues of sexuality, according to Ecumenical News International (ENI).
Lutherans Take Historic Step in Asking for Forgiveness from Mennonites. In what the Rev. Mark S. Hanson described as possibly "the most significant legacy this assembly will leave," the Eleventh Assembly of the LWF here took the historic step of asking the Mennonites for forgiveness for past persecutions, according to a news release from Lutheran World Information. Delegates unanimously approved a statement July 22 calling Lutherans to express their regret and sorrow for past wrongdoings towards Anabaptists and asking for forgiveness, the release said.

Lutheran World Federation Meets In 'Confident Hope,' Says President. Lutherans are meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, for their international assembly at a time when "the world is in pain," said the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, president of the LWF.
LWF Membership Reaches 145 Churches and 70.1 Million Members. Five new churches, all from Asia, have joined the LWF with the Council appoving their admission at their pre-assembly meeting.

Lutherans to meet in Germany July 20-27 for 11th LWF Assembly. In about a week's time, Lutherans from around the world will meet in Stuttgart, Germany, for the Eleventh Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF). "Give Us Today Our Daily Bread" is the theme of the July 20-27 event hosted by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wuerttemberg.
